Publish and domains

What this feature is for

Publishing turns your draft into the live website that visitors see, and the Domains screen controls the web address it is served on. Publishing is all-or-nothing: it only goes live after validation and a successful build.

Who can use it

Publishing and domain management are for Owners and Admins. Staff and Viewers cannot publish or change domains.

Availability and required module/permission

These actions require the Website module. Publishing needs the publish permission, and changing subdomain or custom domains needs the domain-management permission.

Prerequisites

Before you publish for the first time, prepare your content in the draft. Every site automatically has a managed subdomain, so you always have a working address even before you add a custom domain.

Common tasks

Preview the draft: open a preview that uses a signed, expiring link and is never publicly cached.
Publish: promote the validated draft; the live site switches only when the build succeeds.
Manage domains: open Domains to verify a custom domain and make it your primary address.
Roll back: restore a previous published version when you need to undo a change.

Buttons and statuses

The screen shows the current published version, whether a build is in progress, and which domain is primary. A custom domain must be verified before it can resolve to your site.

Warnings and important constraints

If validation or the build fails, your current live site stays unchanged. Only verified domains resolve; unknown or unverified addresses never serve your published site.

Troubleshooting guidance

If publishing does not go live, check the validation or build result — a failed build leaves the previous version in place. If a custom domain does not work, confirm its verification is complete.
